Caring about others can either be an act of compassion or come from self-consciousness. In Raja Yoga we learn about the inner self, the soul. The soul is naturally loving but also aware that it is separate from the body. We typically show our care for others by making the body “behave” as other people would like. As an alternative, we can share with others the positive energy of the soul. If I focus primarily on my behaviour, then I will be overly concerned about how their behaviour affects me. If I focus on using my inner qualities – compassion, honesty, kindness, openness – then I can feel that I have given something of value. I’m not so concerned about whether people like me, agree with me, etc. The more I know, value and make use of my inner self, the more confident I can be of my own value and the value of what I offer to others.
